Practice Management Software

A vision to empower private health care providers

In 1984, we saw a need to help medical doctors with managing their accounts electronically, to stay on top of the ever-increasing morass of paperwork, and to speed up certain “non-essential” activities related to treating their patients. We founded Medinol to speed up billing and the creation of claims, without resorting to cumbersome lists, pricing tables and hand-written vouchers. Using the latest in computer technology as leverage, Medinol transforms the ways in which health care providers think and feel about the generation of their income – the very income which ultimately keeps the practice running, pays the bills, pays the staff salaries, and allows the private practitioner to sustain a decent livable lifestyle.

Our easy-to-use, stand-alone software solution frees health care providers to concentrate more fully on treating their patients, while Medinol takes care of ensuring that the billing information is complete and accurate, that the claim is compliant with statutory requirements, that maximum fee income is achieved, and that the claim has a clear and distinct path to the payer: Since the product’s launch in 1984, our solution has powered more than 500 practices, some of whom are still with us, and other who’ve since moved on in different shape or form. Medinol is so popular and effective that we have processed more than 100 million rand to date. At our peak, we touched approximately 1 out of every six lives in the Cape Town metropole.

Our vision for the future

To contribute to an environment where patients have access to world class quality health care, and one in which health care providers can once again flourish in a sustainable manner.

We believe in the autonomy of the private practitioner and the sanctity of the doctor-patient relationship. In our vision the calling to the profession remains a noble one, despite an adverse environment intent on debasing it and efforts by the vulgar who seek to prostitute the provision of health care to one’s fellow man into nothing more than a business transaction.

Medinol Success

Our approach has garnered praise and support from some of the most influential players in the health care industry. We have key partnerships and alliances in place, which ensure that we can function effectively by being able to draw on a large pool of resources.

Supply and support of Medinol is vested with Better Practice Management, a closed corporation based in Cape Town, South Africa. It is owned and managed by Fudley Bezuidenhout, a Professional Engineer, who is passionate about contributing to private health care in South Africa. When you call BPM, you can speak directly to Fudley, the person who knows everything about Medinol. We believe in complete transparency.

Doctors everywhere are looking to upgrade IT in their practices. This improves the efficiency of their admin staff by allow more activities to be automated this reducing manual labour. Technology is a big part of becoming efficient and moving towards a smoother running practice.

The health care industry already knows firsthand about technology. Technology has greatly improved how patients are diagnosed and treated. Adoption of technology has been used to develop life-saving treatments.

Therefore, doctors and dentists already know how invaluable IT is. Recently, many have begun to use more and more of IT in the management of their practices. Increased adoption is in the realm of practice management software.

Practice management software has a rich list of useful features. Through active use these features lead to better insight into the happenings at the practice, increased speed and certainly increased effectiveness. Pro-actively using practice management software offers superior decision-making and highly efficient results.

Besides just the billing of claims to medical aids and patients, practice management software has many beneficial features for practices. We all know how very time-consuming claim submission can be for a practice, we indeed recommend that this be the area to focus on first. In today’s warp-speed world, you are virtually compelled to submit accounts electronically via EDI.

Electronic claims must be data-perfect! They must have the proper diagnosis or ICD10 codes, and tariff or procedure codes. Improper codes and incomplete claims will be summarily rejected. Use your practice management software to ensure that the data are correct at the time of billing, and review your claims prior to submission.

If claims contain errors, fix them prior to submission. This is an efficient use of time so work is not doubled up on. And don’t forget to close the loop by tracking all paid and unpaid claims by medical aids and patient.

Credit control is a particularly difficult and unpleasant activity in most practices. Your staff dread having to call medical aids and patients in order collect on unpaid accounts. This is, however, a vital function: your practice loses money each day the medical claims remain unpaid. Utilizing the features of your Medinol practice management software can go a long way towards managing the debt and providing information to help your practice collect.

The Medinol story…

Medinol was started in 1984 through the efforts of Fudley Bezuidenhout Pr.Eng. and Dr Kaimy Noor, a GP still currently practicing in the Strand.
The software package was developed to empower individual township-type practices to stand up to the gargantuan medical aids who rule the market by controlling the purse strings.
We are particularly proud that the solid engineering design principles on which Medinol is based has withstood the test of time, handling over R100's million in medical aid claims.
No mean feat for a small organization pitted against giants with massive resources.
